Summer Garden Hints

Specific jobs to consider for January and February

Vegetable Garden

  •  Sow and plant more crops of Carrots, Corn, Tomatoes, Beans and Potatoes to last until end of Autumn
  •  Harvest early Potato varieties and wait until foliage dies down for the later varieties
  •  Keep Tomatoes evenly watered to prevent Blossom End rot and spray with fungicide to prevent Leaf Blight
  •  Plant dwarf Tomatoes and Capsicums in pots so you can move them to more protected places in Autumn
  • Sow seed or plant plants now for early Winter veges such as Leeks, Cauliflower, Broccoli and Brussell Sprouts

Fruit Trees

  •  Keep up Mite sprays as some Citrus are very susceptible eg. Mandarins & Limes
  • Fertilise with Citrus food as they are starting to make new growth and flowers and make sure they are watered well over Summer months

Stonefruit & Pipfruit

  • Summer prune all Stonefruit after harvest eg. Apricots, plums, Nectarines, Peaches
  • Keep up spray program to prevent Curly Leaf and Blackspot

Small Fruits- Berries, Pepinos, Currants

  • Make sure you keep them well watered to develop the fruit and during wet and humid weather keep Fungicides up to prevent fruit rotting
  • Plant Pepinos in pots and move to more protected places in Autumn

Flower Garden

  • Cut back Annual flower plants such as Impatiens, begonias, Marigolds, Dahlia, Petunias when they grow too 'leggy' and start falling over and they will bush up and keep flowering until the weather cools down
  • Keep deadheading Roses and other flowering plants to encourage more flowers
  • Wisterias and Clematis prune any unwanted shoots back to 2-3 buds all through growing season and do not touch during winter to get best flowers
  • Aphid time so keep vigilant and attack early
  • Stake any leggy Roses and Perennials to prevent smothering other plants and keep plenty of air movement around foliage
  • Fertilize Roses now to last them through until leaf fall

Hot & Dry Holiday Season

  • Going away during the Hot & Dry Season? Let us take care of your property while you are away. Mowing, watering etc.

  • Now is the time to service your existing irrigation system and consider installing new irrigation to garden or lawn areas.
